Replace Every 6 Months

If your Samsung fridge dispenses water or makes ice, it filters that water through a replaceable cartridge. The filter removes chlorine, sediment and odours, and on newer cartridges also cysts and some heavy metals. Samsung recommends replacing it every six months or roughly every 300 gallons (about 1,100 litres), whichever comes first.

An old filter does not just affect taste. As the carbon media clogs, water flow to the dispenser and ice maker slows, ice cubes come out smaller or hollow, and in hard water areas mineral build-up can strain the water valve. If your dispenser has become noticeably slower, the filter is the first thing to check.

Which filter does my fridge take?

Samsung has used a handful of filter designs over the years, and they are not interchangeable. The quickest way to be certain is to remove your current filter and read the part number printed on it, or check the user manual for your model number. As a general guide:

Filter part numberAlso sold asTypical modelsNotes
DA29-00020BHAF-CIN/EXPRS68, RS67, RF65, RH68 seriesThe most common current filter; internal, twists into the fridge compartment

How to change the filter

Most internal Samsung filters change in under a minute with no tools. Turn the cartridge a quarter turn anti-clockwise until it releases, pull it out, remove the cap from the new cartridge, push it in and turn a quarter turn clockwise until it locks. Run four to five litres of water through the dispenser afterwards to flush loose carbon particles; slightly grey water at first is normal and harmless.

After fitting, reset the filter indicator so the reminder starts counting again. On most models you hold the Ice Type, Alarm or Filter Reset button for three seconds until the indicator returns to blue or switches off. The exact button varies by model, so check your manual if the light does not reset.

Genuine or compatible?

Genuine Samsung filters cost more but are certified to Samsung's filtration standards and will never cause a warranty argument. Reputable compatible filters can perform well and typically cost a third to a half of the genuine price, but quality varies widely between brands. If you buy compatible, choose one certified to NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine, taste and odour) and ideally NSF/ANSI 53 (cysts and lead), and avoid unbranded cartridges with no certification markings at all.

Common Questions

Most models show a filter indicator on the control panel that turns red or orange after six months of tracked use. If your model has no indicator, set a reminder for every six months, or sooner if water flow drops or the taste changes.
Yes. Most models accept a bypass plug (sometimes supplied with the fridge) in place of the cartridge, and the dispenser will serve unfiltered mains water. This is a reasonable choice if you already filter water elsewhere or have very good mains supply.
Air trapped in the new cartridge is the usual cause. Dispense several litres to purge the line. If flow stays poor, check the filter is fully locked in place and that the water supply valve behind the fridge is fully open.
